Short answer

October is the wettest month at 658 mm over 21 rain days; June is the hottest, with an average daily maximum of 34.9°C. The dry, bright window runs from March to August, and the rainy season from September to December, which is three quarters of the annual rain.

Read the last two columns together. A month with 21 rain days and 658 mm is not the same as a month with 21 rain days and 272 mm: the first is a week of your trip, the second is afternoon showers. October and November are the two that change plans.

March to May: the window most people miss

March is 36 mm over 7 rain days, April 50 mm over 7, May 71 mm over 10 — and the temperature climbs from 28.4°C to 33.4°C. That is the strongest combination on the table: dry ground, a sea that has warmed up, and none of the 34°C-plus peak that June brings.

The catch is that April and May are also when domestic tourism picks up around the public holidays. Prices rise before the weather becomes a problem, so early March and the second half of April are the quieter bets.

June to August: hot, with a wet evening

June averages 34.9°C as a daily maximum, which means the middle of the day is not for walking. The workable pattern is early mornings and late afternoons, with something indoors or in water between 11:00 and 15:00. Rainfall is still modest — 68 mm in June, 92 in July — but it arrives in the afternoon and it arrives fast.

August is the turn: 167 mm over 14 rain days, double July, and the month when the sea gets rough enough that red flags appear on My Khe. If you are choosing between July and August for a beach trip, July is the drier of the two.

September to December: the wet season

September 394 mm, October 658, November 486, December 272 — 1,810 mm of the year's 2,399 mm falls in these four months, which is three quarters of the total. October is the peak on every measure: rainfall, rain days and the chance of a washed-out day.

It is not constant rain, and the temperature is pleasant — 29.6°C in October, 25.3°C in December. What changes is the plan: this is the season for museums, food, and the indoor half of a trip, with outdoor stops taken in the gaps.

January and February: dry, cooler, underrated

January is 83 mm over 14 rain days and 25.2°C; February drops to 22 mm over 7 days. Both are comfortable months to walk a city in, and the light rain days in January are usually short drizzle rather than the October downpour.

The catch is Tet. The lunar new year falls in late January or February, and for a week around it small businesses close, prices rise and the town half-empties of the people who make it work. Check the Tet dates for your year before booking.

What the numbers do not tell you

What the table does do well is settle the argument about when to come. If you want beach weather, March to July. If you want the city without the heat, December to February. If you are coming anyway in October, plan as if one day will be lost and you will usually be pleasantly wrong.

What each season asks you to pack

March to May: light clothes, a hat, and shoes you can walk in. The heat is dry enough that cotton works and dries overnight. June to August: the same, plus something to swim in and a plan that puts you indoors between 11:00 and 15:00.

September to December: a light rain jacket rather than an umbrella, sandals that survive water, and one dry pair of shoes for the flight home. January and February: a layer for the evening, because 19.7°C with wind off the river feels cooler than it reads.
