Christmas week in Da Nang is warm and wet: December averages 25.3°C and 272 mm over 21 rain days. Tet is drier — February averages 22 mm — but a week of closures around the lunar new year changes what is open. Check the Tet dates for your year before booking.

Christmas week
December in Da Nang is not a winter destination and it is not a beach destination either. The average maximum is 25.3°C, the average minimum 20.5°C, and 272 mm falls across 21 rain days — the fourth-wettest month of the year, behind October, November and September.
What that means in practice: a warm Christmas with a jacket for the evening, indoor afternoons more often than beach ones, and hotel prices at their annual peak because it is also the busiest fortnight for visitors from colder places.
The city decorates and the riverfront gets busy in the evenings. What it does not publish in advance is a fixed programme of events — the Dragon Bridge show runs at 21:00 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and on major holidays, and that is the one schedule you can plan around.
Tet, and what closes
Tet is the lunar new year, and it falls in late January or February. For roughly a week around it, small businesses shut, many family restaurants close, and the people who run the city's service economy go home to their families. Museums and big attractions usually stay open; the small places you actually want to eat at often do not.
The weather is on your side, though. February averages 22 mm over 7 rain days and 26.3°C — the driest month of the first half of the year — which makes it a good time to walk the city, provided you have somewhere to eat.
What to book early
- Rooms. Both weeks are peak: Christmas for international visitors, Tet for domestic travel. The good mid-range places go first.
- Ba Na Hills tickets, if you are going between 25 December and 2 January. The ticket is 1,000,000₫ for an adult from outside Da Nang, and the queue is the constraint, not supply.
- One dinner. Not every meal — one, for the evening that matters, booked a week ahead.
What not to book: day tours. Both weeks have volatile weather and a fixed tour date is the worst thing to hold when a wet day arrives. Keep the outdoor days movable and book them 48 hours out.

| Christmas week | Tet week | |
|---|---|---|
| Weather | 272 mm, 21 rain days, 25.3°C | 22 mm, 7 rain days, 26.3°C |
| Open | Normal hours | Small places closed for days |
| Crowds | Highest of the year | Domestic travel peak |
| Good for | Riverfront evenings, indoor days | Walking, museums, dry streets |
If you have to choose: Tet for weather and walking, Christmas for atmosphere and for the beach being warm enough to sit beside even when it rains. Neither is a beach holiday in the sense that July is.
Getting around during the two weeks
Traffic in Da Nang is manageable most of the year and busy during both weeks, for different reasons: Christmas brings visitors who fill the beach road, and Tet brings the whole country onto the roads at once. The practical difference is that a 14-minute drive to the Marble Mountains can take twice that on the evenings around the new year.
The airport is 6 km from the An Thuong strip, about ten minutes on a normal day. In the days immediately before Tet, leave an extra hour: the roads fill with people travelling home, and the taxi queue at the airport is the longest it gets all year.

| Thing | Book how early | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Room | 6–10 weeks | Peak fortnight, mid-range sells out |
| Ba Na ticket | A few days | Queue is the bottleneck, not tickets |
| Dinner on the night | 1 week | One table, not every meal |
| Day tours | 48 hours, not before | Weather decides, so keep it movable |
If December rain is the problem
December's 272 mm is spread over 21 days, which sounds worse than it feels: it is the same pattern as October, lighter. The version that works is the rainy-day version of the city — a museum in the morning, a long lunch, and the riverfront in the evening when the decorations are lit and the rain has stopped.
What does not work is booking a beach holiday for Christmas week and hoping. The sea is warm — 25°C air, warmer water — but the sand is wet more often than not, and the sunbed operators close when it rains.

The weather is the driest of the first half of the year, but expect closures for about a week and book rooms early.
